Medical Students For Pathology
ENGAGING MEDICAL STUDENTS FOR A CAREER IN PATHOLOGY
USCAP is concerned about the diminishing visibility of pathology as a formal, structured discipline within the curricula of many medical schools and the consequential reduced awareness of pathology as an exceptional career option. The Academy is committed to educating medical students about the advantages of all aspects of pathology, emphasizing that now, more than ever, pathologists have an active role and responsibility on health care teams as critical determinants of patient outcomes.
Initiatives
- The Academy is contacting pathology student interest groups to ignite their enthusiasm for pathology as a discipline and to introduce them to essence of USCAP.
- USCAP is encouraging under-represented minority medical students to attend all Annual Meetings as guests of the Academy.
- This dedicated web page is the resource for medical student engagement and information, and will continue to be developed.
Preliminary Medical Student Reactions
“I found that in my pathology elective, I saw more interesting cases in one week than I did my entire year on the wards. I really enjoy the cerebral aspect of pathology and I really just love that it’s involved with every discipline of medicine“

“I think the most appealing aspect of pathology is the fact that it is a field that offers constant intellectual stimulation. I also appreciate the visual aspect of pathology…it is like artwork, and for people who are visual learners and appreciate art, I think it brings to life the idea that medicine is an art….“

“…..At this point, I have given a lot of thought into what career specialty I will choose, and I’ve given a lot of thought to pathology. It’s a very exciting field. It’s one of the most interesting subjects that I’m studying in my preclinical years. And it’s one where I would feel very happy to pursue for the rest of my life and my career
