The Medical Student Genomics Workshop is back for USCAP 2027!

We’re excited to bring the Medical Student Genomics Workshop back to the 2027 USCAP Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC, Canada! Designed specifically for medical students, this interactive, two-part workshop offers a hands-on introduction to the rapidly evolving world of genomic testing and its role in modern medicine. Travel awards are available to help medical students attend the workshop.

Description
Next-generation sequencing methods and multi-gene panels have entered clinical practice. This workshop is a unique opportunity for you, as a medical student, to explore genetic and genomic testing and to understand the pragmatic application to patient care. Regardless of your planned specialty, genomic testing will become an important part of your career. Using a case-based, interactive small-group approach, workshop participants will learn key principles related to genomic testing and interpretation of results. The workshop will also include practical hands-on instruction with the use of online genomic pathology tools and includes actual patient reports and slide review.

The workshop was developed and will be led by members of the Undergraduate Training Resident in Genomics (TRIG) Working Group. Established in 2016, this group made up of experts in molecular pathology, medical education, and genetic counseling was formed to provide genomic pathology educational resources. The workshop is meant to be interactive with the majority of learning will take place in small teams with faculty support.

The workshop will consist of approximately 6-8 hours of teaching.  To allow you to participate in the workshop as well as USCAP meeting activities, it will be broken up into two days.  The first session will be on the afternoon of Monday, March 15, with the second on the morning of Tuesday, March 16.

The workshop consists of 4 exercises:

  1. Familial/ Single-Gene Testing
  2. Prognostic vs. Predictive Gene-Panel Testing
  3. Cancer Gene Testing
  4. Next generation sequencing

Who is eligible for the award?

The UTRIG Working Group received support through an R25 grant from the National Cancer Institute. With this funding, travel awards to attend the workshop will be provided to current US citizens/permanent residents. To be eligible for the travel award, you must attend the workshop on both days. Additional travel grants will be offered through USCAP and the USCAP Advancement to expand access to Canadian students.  Other international students are not eligible to receive an award, but are still encouraged to submit an application for a slot in the workshop. 

What is awarded?

You will receive up to $1,000 (reimbursed, receipts required).

  • Round trip travel to/from Vancouver, BC, Canada
  • Lodging for two nights and ground transportation to/from airport (train station)/hotel (maximum of $300 per day of the course)
  • Attendance of the full course and completion of the course feedback survey is required to be reimbursed
