Victor E. Reuter, MD
2022 USCAP Board’s Distinguished Pathologist
Dr. Victor E. Reuter was born in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico and attended the University of Puerto Rico, where he obtained his BS in Biology. He received his MD from the University National Pedro Henriquez Ureña, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. After completing his residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital/Philadelphia, he went to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) as a fellow in Oncologic Surgical Pathology and has been there ever since – 38 years and counting.
Dr. Reuter is presently Vice-Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) in New York City and Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. His interests run the entire spectrum of neoplasms of the urogenital tract. He leads the Genitourinary Pathology Team at Memorial and founded the Genitourinary Pathology Subspecialty Fellowship that has existed uninterrupted at his institution since 1991. He is Co-Director of the Pathology Core of NIH/NCI sponsored SPOREs in Prostate and Bladder Cancer at MSKCC. He served as Chairman of the Oversight Committee of the Pathology Research Core of his institution’s NIH/NCI sponsored Cancer Center Support Grant and as Co-Chair of the NCI Kidney Cancer Clinical Trials Task Force. He is past chair of the Education Committee of the United States Academy of Pathology and has served as President of the Medical Staff at MSKCC, President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, and Vice-President for North America of the International Academy of Pathology.
Besides multiple resident and fellow teaching awards, he received the Koss Medal from the International Society of Urological Pathology, The Harvey Goldman Distinguished Teaching and Mentoring Award from the USCAP, as well as the F.K. Mostofi Distinguished Service award. He is co-editor of the 2016 World Health Organization Classification of Tumors of the Urinary System and Male Genital Organs (4th Edition), Sternberg’s textbook Diagnostic Surgical Pathology, and Biopsy Interpretation of the Bladder.
Despite his accomplishments, nothing gives him more pleasure than teaching, mentoring, and spending time with his wife Maria del Mar, daughters, and grandchildren.
