2022 Interactive Microscopy Guidelines

The USCAP Interactive Microscopy Program at the Annual Meeting is a unique, interactive experience. The intent is for one faculty member to interact with up to 9 learners at a multi-head microscope to create a mentoring experience that simulates clinical sign out. Based on evaluations and validated educational needs, this course may be held for up to 3 years.

Program Description

  1. The room will be set up with nine individual microscopes and one 10-headed microscope.
  2. These sessions are not intended for virtual slide viewing, but for looking at actual glass slides. You are responsible for bringing your cases (glass slides) with you. Most faculty bring between 8 and 12 cases. You may choose to bring supplemental special stains or immunostains to show during the case discussion. A variety of cases works best; selecting a group of 10 of the same kind of case (for example, 10 cases of cervical HPV) does not hold the interest of the group. Many faculty also bring 2-3 additional examples of the same or related entities and 2-3 cases of other entities in the differential diagnosis per case. Based on the venue, special arrangements may be made to show radiologic images, but this is not guaranteed and must be arranged well in advance of your session.
  3. PowerPoint presentations cannot be used in interactive microscopy sessions at the Annual Meeting.
  4. Each session lasts 1.5 hours. It is important to finish on time to allow the next group to set up.
  5. USCAP will print the case histories and deliver to the room prior to the session. Faculty will need to distribute the case histories and the glass slides to the attendees prior to the preview time.
  6. Learners will have 20 minutes of slide preview time at individual microscopes. It is recommended to use a timer for 1.5-2 minutes and announce the passing of slides in one direction. This will allow all learners to see the slides and will keep the session running on time.
  7. After the preview time, the learners and faculty will convene at the multi-headed scope for the discussion.

Required Materials

Faculty are required to submit case histories and handout information online by Tuesday, February 8, 2022. USCAP staff will prepare the course handouts based on the information submitted. Faculty must prepare cases (glass slides) and bring them to their session at the Annual Meeting

Glass Slides

Faculty must prepare cases (glass slides) and bring them to their session at the Annual Meeting. Most faculty bring between 8 and 12 cases, depending on your teaching speed. You may choose to bring supplemental special stains or immunostains to show during the case discussion. Many faculty choose to bring 2-3 additional examples of the same or related entities and 2-3 cases of other entities in the differential diagnosis per case. USCAP will provide 4 slide trays per room. Using slide trays is typically more efficient than using slide boxes. Please leave the slide trays in the room when you are finished with your session.

All materials will be due on Tuesday, February 8, 2022.

Use of Materials and Copyright

USCAP will provide course registrants with access to the pre and post meeting materials online.

Authors and/or their employing institution should own copyright to all images, materials and graphics used in their presentations. If any content is not owned by the author/institution, written permission from the copyright holder for the duration and terms of its use must be provided to USCAP by the author at the time of content submission. USCAP shares copyright of all materials published on its web pages and presented in its forums with the authors of the material for the duration of its use by USCAP, after which exclusively the author holds copyright. USCAP will not use the material for any purpose other than that for which it was submitted without the author’s consent.


The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology protects the integrity of its educational program content by strict enforcement of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education. In accordance with requirements of the ACCME, USCAP requires all individuals who are in a position to control the content of a CME activity to disclose all financial relationships with any ineligible companies that you have had in the past 24 months. An ineligible company is any entity whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients. There is no minimum financial threshold; you should disclose all financial relationships, regardless of the potential relevance of each relationship to the education.

Mechanisms are in place for conflict mitigation and disclosure notification prior to delivery of the educational activity to learners. This policy is elaborated on the USCAP website under Safeguarding Content.
