2019 Short Course Guidelines

Short Courses are subspecialty seminars that target specific issues in pathology. Short Courses generally cover diagnostic challenges or provide practical reviews and approaches in topically specific areas. Faculty should provide current perspectives and modern trends in diagnostic criteria, clinical correlation, and ancillary studies. The goal of the Short Courses are to:

  1. Enhance the participants’ professional competence
  2. Stimulate interest, understanding, and preparation for future responsibilities
  3. Provide a practice update for current standards, techniques, criteria, classifications, etc.

Faculty for the 2019 Short Courses are expected to prepare and submit the following materials:

  • Financial Disclosure Form
  • Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation
  • Microsoft Word document containing references
  • SAMs or ARS Multiple Choice Questions
    Question Writing Guidelines
  • Virtual Slides/Still Images (optional)

Program Description

Short Courses will be held on Wednesday, March 20 and Thursday, March 21 at the 2019 Annual Meeting. Each Short Course is 3 hours with 1 break. On Wednesday, each course should schedule a one-hour break to allow time for poster viewing in the exhibit hall. The Short Course time slots are below.

  • Wednesday morning: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (one-hour break from 9:30 AM -10:30 AM)
  • Wednesday afternoon: 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM (one-hour break from 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM)
  • Thursday morning: 8:00 AM – 11:30 AM (half-hour break 9:30 AM – 10:00 AM)
  • Thursday afternoon: 1:00 PM – 4:30 PM (half-hour break 2:30 PM – 3:00 PM)

Required Materials

Faculty for the 2019 Short Courses are expected to prepare and submit the following materials:

  • Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation
  • Microsoft Word document containing references
  • SAMs or ARS Multiple Choice Questions
  • Virtual Slides/Still Images (optional)

All materials will be due on Thursday, January 24, 2019.

Pre-Meeting Materials

  • Course registrants will receive a secure online PDF of each presentation submitted. These should be submitted in advance of the meeting and be as close to the final slides as possible.
  • Microsoft Word document containing references (if references are not included in the presentation)
  • Cases
    Many faculty choose to submit unknown cases. These typically include a short clinical history and images.
    • Images – Virtual slides are highly preferred by the registrants. You may upload Aperio scanned virtual slides on the USCAP FTP site. Alternatively, you may choose to use multiple representative still images and a history for each case, or a combination of still images and a virtual slide. You can include as many images as you deem are necessary. These images will be uploaded to the USCAP faculty portal. Please include an identifying label (i.e. diagnosis) on histologic slides/images.
  • SAM/ARS Information
    Each Short Course at the Annual meeting will provide American Board of Pathology Continuing Certification credit. In order to offer credit, the Short Course will utilize the use of an Audience Response System or the development of SAM questions. Each course director has designated whether the course will use SAM or ARS.

      • Audience Response Questions
        USCAP is now offering SAMs credit for select sessions by using an Audience Response System (ARS). For those sessions that are using ARS, please submit three (3) Audience Response Questions, including one reference, per speaker. Question slides should be included in your PowerPoint at the spot they will be presented. After uploading your presentation to the faculty portal, the USCAP staff will program your ARS questions into the software and include the necessary information into your presentation. If changes are made to your presentation, after submitting to the faculty portal, it is your responsibility to contact Krista Cairns and notify her of any updates.

Post-Meeting Materials

  • Course registrants will receive a secure online PDF of each final presentation submitted through the speaker ready room. Faculty members who do not want to have their presentation (or portions of their presentation) used on the website, must state this desire to USCAP in writing to Krista Cairns.

Presentation Guidelines

Presentations should be created using Microsoft PowerPoint. Apple Keynote based presentations will not be supported. Slides should be uncomplicated, and the text and graphics should be prepared to present in a large lecture. All presentations should use the USCAP 2019 Annual Meeting Template intro slides, at a minimum (link below).

Tips for Building Your Presentation

  • Format for presentation must be 16:9
  • Sans Serif fonts are recommended for projection
  • Use a font size of at least 28 points
  • Use no more than 2 fonts on a slide
  • If you are inserting images, the recommended format is JPEG or JPG
  • If you are inserting a video, the recommended video format is .WMV

We understand that all short course faculty members are seasoned educators. However, the following were noted on past evaluations and are intended to alert you to the most commonly identified problem areas.

  • Courses dealing with new and experimental issues should emphasize practical diagnostic aspects (take-home pearls) when possible (e.g. differential diagnosis, patient management, cost effectiveness). Registrants appreciate an abundance of H&E and morphology slides.
  • For case-oriented presentations, the syllabus should include a listing of the final case diagnoses. Recap and highlight some of the main points at the end of each case. The sequence of your syllabus and your oral presentation should be the same.
  • Do not attempt to provide an excess of information, thereby rushing the presentation. A major error is trying to show too much and doing it too fast. Pace yourself!
  • Allow time for questions and answers and still allow your session to end on time. Please repeat questions from the audience so the answers will have relevance for everyone. Make sure everyone has an opportunity for questions – don’t let one person monopolize the time.
  • An enthusiastic and energetic delivery makes a positive impression. Speak into the microphone and do not let your voice drop off at the end of a sentence. Turning away to face the screen causes the audience to miss key words.
  • The slides provided as a pre-meeting handout, should be the projected PowerPoint slides. A major criticism on evaluations is that the slides provided to learners do not match the slides that are used in the presentation.

Use of Materials and Copyright

USCAP will provide course registrants with access to the pre and post meeting materials online.

Authors and/or their employing institution should own copyright to all images, materials and graphics used in their presentations. If any content is not owned by the author/institution, written permission from the copyright holder for the duration and terms of its use must be provided to USCAP by the author at the time of content submission. USCAP shares copyright of all materials published on its web pages and presented in its forums with the authors of the material for the duration of its use by USCAP, after which exclusively the author holds copyright. USCAP will not use the material for any purpose other than that for which it was submitted without the author’s consent.


The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology protects the integrity of its educational program content by strict enforcement of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Standards for Commercial Support. In accordance with requirements of the ACCME, USCAP requires all individuals who are in a position to control the content of a CME activity to disclose all relevant financial relationships with any commercial interest that produces, markets, resells, or distributes healthcare goods or services consumed by or used on patients. Relevant financial relationships are defined as remuneration paid to you or your spouse/partner in any amount that has occurred within the last 12 months when these two conditions apply:

  1. You or your spouse/partner has a financial relationship with a commercial interest.
  2. You have the opportunity to affect CME content related to the products or services of that commercial interest.

All materials will be due on Thursday, January 24, 2019.


Short Course faculty receive the following:

  • Travel Stipend – The Academy will reimburse for travel expenses up to $800 for the first course and an additional $500 for each additional course (short course, long course, special course).
  • Registration – All short course faculty receive complimentary general registration, companion meeting registration, and registration for their course. Upon request, short course faculty who are current members of the USCAP can receive complimentary admission to the long course, and either two short courses or one special course of their choice.
