24. Aspiration Cytopathology of Lymph Nodes

Paul E. Wakely, Jr., M.D., Ohio State University College of Medicine, Columbus, OH

The increasing acceptance of fine needle aspiration cytopathology as a diagnostic tool has forced pathologists to evaluate smears made from aspirates of both superficial and deeply seated lymph nodes, as well as smears of lymphoid lesions from extranodal sites. This course is directed toward practicing general pathologists, pathologists with cytopathology expertise, and pathologists in training. It is intended to provide an overview of the light microscopic cytomorphology of a variety of lymph node lesions to participants including reactive hyperplasia, various types of lymphadenitis, non-neoplastic lymphoid lesions, lymphoproliferative neoplasms, and metastatic neoplasms to lymph nodes. The cytomorphology and immunoprofile of malignant lymphomas are discussed in detail. A case format is used as the basis for discussion of differential diagnosis and problem areas of lymphoid and non-lymphoid lesions in lymph nodes. Recent advances in knowledge and classification of lymphoma, and controversy regarding the proper role, limitations, requirements and accuracy of cytopathology in this area is presented. Case histories and a limited number of sets containing both glass slides and case transparencies will be available for advance mailing. All registrants will be mailed a set of transparencies for retention after the meeting. A syllabus will be distributed at the time of the course. (Last Scheduled Presentation)
